Therapy Benefits

Emotional Support Dogs

Having your dog by your side, man… that hits different. It’s like having this little furry angel who’s always there for you, no matter what. Dogs don’t judge, they don’t roll their eyes, they don’t say, “Bro, you’re being dramatic.” They just sit there like, “I got you, homie.” And that kind of love? That’s powerful. I know because I’ve been there.

At one point, I had a therapy dog and that little guy was essential to my whole rehabilitation process. I’m talking life‑changing. When everything felt heavy, he was right there like, “Heyyy, cheer up, my guy,”

And it’s not just emotional, it’s science! Petting a dog literally lowers your stress. Like, you’re sitting there all tense, and the dog walks up like, “Pet me,” and suddenly your cortisol—the stress hormone—is like, “Alright, I’m out.” And then your brain starts pumping out serotonin and dopamine, the happy stuff. It’s like your dog is a walking, barking antidepressant with a wet nose.

Dogs don’t just make you feel better—they make life better. They’re not “just pets.” They’re family. They’re the ones who sit with you during the bad days and celebrate with you on the good ones. They bring comfort, joy, and that goofy happiness only a dog can give.

And let me tell you about my therapy dog, Barbosa. Oh man… Barbosa was a legend. This dog helped me through one of the toughest chapters of my life. I was recovering from a traumatic brain injury, and he was right there, helping me relearn basic skills. We’d walk together, and he’d keep me steady—making sure I didn’t drift left or right like a shopping cart with a busted wheel. He kept me focused, kept me grounded, and honestly… kept me going.

Barbosa wasn’t just a therapy dog. He was a partner. A teammate. A fluffy little hero.
